Pioneer Bluffs, the historic headquarters of Pioneer Bluffs Ranch, is a twelve acre property located in the Valley of the South Fork of the Cottonwood River just north of Matfield Green, Kansas (pop. 68). Pioneer Bluffs is at the center of the Flint Hills the largest expanse of untilled tallgrass prairie in North America.
The scenic beauty of the prairie, the mile long stone fence, and the stately cluster of house and barns combined with the historic significance of the Rogler family who founded Pioneer Bluffs in 1859, have made Pioneer Bluffs a revered landmark. It was designated a National Register Historic District in 1992.
Pioneer Bluffs is strategically located on the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway between the population centers of Kansas City and Wichita.
In 2006 Strachan Donnelley and Bill and Julia McBride purchased Pioneer Bluffs at auction. It was one of seven parcels of the 4,000 acre Rogler Ranch.
Subsequently, the Pioneer Bluffs Foundation was formed as a 501(c)3 nonprofit to “preserve Pioneer Bluffs and engage in, demonstrate, and educate the public regarding the stewardship of its historic, natural, and agricultural resources.” The Foundation received tax exempt status in July of 2007.
